A Day of Windows 8 Development with Markus Egger

Presenter: Markus Egger

This event took place on Friday, November 2, 2012.

Where:   Onsite at CODE Training Center (6605 Cypresswood Dr. Suite 300, Spring, TX 77379) or remotely via GoToMeeting
When:    Nov 2, 2012 (Friday)
Desc:      An in-depth lecture style training to enable attendees to write real world applications for the Windows 8 operating system

CODE Training and EPS Software will be holding an intensive 1-day lecture style boot-camp on Windows 8 specifically designed for developers of business applications who wish to learn how Windows 8 will impact their efforts today and in the future, and how to prepare themselves today to make sure their investment in both skill and technology is safe. This class provides an overview of various ways to develop for Windows 8, including the new Windows 8 Style User Interface. The class aims to teach development in this new world, but perhaps more importantly, it aims to provide an overview of what’s to come and how that will impact development even today. For instance, the class teaches architecture and implementation techniques that will make sure you can bring your technology and skills forward far into the future. Covered topics include C#/VB style development for Windows 8. It also takes a detailed look at HTML5 and JavaScript development for Windows 8 Style UIs. Note: C++ development for Windows 8 is covered in our C++ class.

The training class will be held at our offices in Houston, Texas as well as online via GoToMeeting. After the class, attendees will receive the PowerPoint slides, the code samples and videos of each class as reference materials.

Friday
9:00 – 10:45 A Developer's Introduction to Windows 8
A lap around Windows 8, with a special eye on aspects developers are interested in. This includes a detailed overview of Windows 8 architecture in both “Desktop” and “Windows 8 Style UI” mode. The presenter will go into great detail about the various sub-systems and what they are there for, how to use them, and what the implications are (including the not so obvious). After this session, attendees will have a good understanding of what things like “WinRT”, “Windows 8 Style UI XAML”, and many other things are.
10:45 – 11:00 BREAK
11:00 – 12:00 An Overview of Windows 8 Development Methodologies
Windows 8 enables and supports several major development approaches, ranging from native C++, to C#/VB and “XAML”, and even HTML5 and JavaScript specifically geared towards Windows 8. And of course .NET (including the new 4.5 versions) has a big role to play as well. This session takes a close look at all these options and provides first examples of what it is like to develop using each of the different approaches and technologies.
12:00 – 13:00 LUNCH BREAK
13:00 – 14:00 Smart Architecture - Not Just for Windows 8
To protect your current investment and bring it forward into the world of Window 8, it is of utmost importance to have solid architecture in place. This is important for Windows 8, but it is also important in current Windows and Web technologies as well as various mobile platforms (including iOS and Android). This session shows how to create and use such architecture, and set it up in a way where it creates a very productive development environment. Even if you have no intentions to move to Windows 8 any time soon, the things you will learn in this session are immediately applicable.
14:00 – 15:15 Building Windows 8 Applications with C#/VB and XAML
Many Microsoft business application developers are currently using various .NET technologies. Very likely, their language of choice is either C# or VB. For those people, the most likely path forward is the use of C#/VB and “Windows 8 Style UI XAML”. It may not be the .NET environment you are used to, and it isn’t WPF or Silverlight, but it is a clear succession. After this session, people with VB/C# and .NET knowledge will be able to hit the ground running with WinRT and Windows 8 Style UI XAML.
15:15 – 15:30 BREAK
15:30 – 16:45 Building Windows 8 Applications with HTML and JavaScript
You have never touched WPF or Silverlight and are really more at home in the world of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript? Then this is the part of the presentation you are most looking forward to. In this session, we explore how to build native Windows 8 applications using standard technologies and techniques you would normally associate with the Web more than Rich Clients. HTML5 is a first-class citizen in Windows 8. Combined with CSS and JavaScript, developers can build native Windows 8 applications that are indistinguishable from C#/VB or C++ Windows 8 applications. A great choice for many scenarios.
16:45 – 17:00 BREAK
17:00 – ?? Ask the Experts / Q&A
Got questions? Got a Windows 8 application you are ready to build? Ask the experts and hit the ground running!
